Laldenga Memorial
Ruling Mizo National Front (MNF)
has decided to renovate the tomb of Laldenga, its founder and former chief
minister as a befitting memorial to the late leader. Record and Revival
Committee of the party took the decision when it met with the Home Minister
R Tlanghmingthanga in chair. He is also the MNF treasurer. The family of
Laldenga has expressed the desire that the memorial should be simple in
design. There should be no express ostentanianism. Accordingly the brief was
given to the architect. The project will cost about Rs. 4 lakhs. Chief
Minister Zoramthanga and his colleagues surveyed the area identified for the
memorial at the busy Treasury Square in the heart of Aizawl. Laldenga was
President of the MNF, which led an armed insurrection against the Indian
union on March 1, 1966 demanding sovereign status for the Mizos. He came
back to mainstream politics after signing a historic accord with the Centre
on June 30, 1986.
