Hmar students’ body urges media to restrain itself
The
Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) has strongly reacted to a news item. The
report said Arabinda Bhatacharjee, Central Assistant Secretary of the Vishwa
Hindu Parishad alleged that the Christian missionaries were in a conspiracy
to create panic amongst the Dimasas in the ethnic clashes between the
Dimasas and the Hmars.
Lallawmthang Hmar and Herald Brown Joute, president and secretary of the HSA,
Barak valley respectively dismissed the allegation and made it clear that
the “missionaries are totally uninvolved in the recent crisis in North
Cachar Hills.” Terming the allegations as “totally baseless,” the two
student leaders said the Church had always been an “instrument of peace” in
times of strife and the Church leaders had taken various steps to “restore
peace” in the ethnic clashes. Condemning the VHP for trying to paint a
“wrong picture” of the crisis by making it a religious issue when it was
actually a political one, the two student leaders regretted that such false
propaganda had really harmed the noble image of the Church. They said such
inflammatory allegations were “a major hindrance” in restoring peace in
North Cachar Hills. The HSA urged the newspapers not to report any incident
without going for an in-depth study of the issues involved.
