No North East in Railways Tour Guide

‘TRAINS at a Glance’ is a publication of the Indian railways to help tourists Indian and foreign plan their visits to the places of splendour –nature wise and history wise and of course even spiritually.

True to its moto, the latest edition offers faithfully route maps to all places of interest across the country except the North East. Will somebody who is anybody in the Rail Bhavan, the headquarters of the largest transport network, bother to explain?

Interestingly, the publication highlights the tourist spots of Port Blair, a place which is not on the rail map of the country. Yes, there is a mention of Guwahati not on stand alone basis but in a long list of places that can be visited. And here too Guwahati is placed low down the order at the 95th place.

Foreign tourists usually take help of guide books to decide on their itinerary for India. Since the Trains at a glace is published by the sarkari railways, they are bound to take it as gospel truth. And in the process are bound to be misguided and displeased too. For missing out on the North East which is next to Jammu & Kashmir in its scenic splendour with the likes of Kaziranga and Manas.

Are the local tourism departments also to be blamed for the Railway apathy? The last word is yet to be said. Keep watching this space for more details.
