Rs. 55 Crore for NE export promotion

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 55.03 crore to Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Assam for export promotion. The grant is from the critical infrastructure balance schemes, assistance to critical infrastructure balance schemes, assistance to states for development of export infrastructure and other activities scheme.

Development of trade and exports in the North-Eastern region is receiving a ‘very high priority’. A fund was created for this purpose following the Prime Minister’s announcement in January 2000 known as ‘PM action plan for the north-east.’ The Government has so far sanctioned Rs 7.95 crore for 21 projects. The commerce department has recently introduced transport subsidy for horticulture products from the North-Eastern region under Export Development Fund.

Initially 10 products were identified for transport subsidy and some more added to the list later.
An empowered committee led by the commerce secretary monitors and implements the measures for development of trade and exports in the NE region as per the action plan. It also looks after the implementation of the recommendations of the task force on development of border trade and inter-country trade from the North-East.
