NCH turns to Gogoi THE North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) has appealed for Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s intervention for restoring peace and normalcy in the district. In a memorandum, Chief Executive Member Purnendu Langthasa told Gogoi that forty innocent persons were killed in the raging ethnic clash between Cachar and North Cachar Hills. The dead included his brother. Thousands have been rendered homeless. Property worth lakh of rupees has been either lost in arson or looted. Langthasa requested the Chief Minister to take immediate steps for safety and security of all the people of N C Hills by deploying sufficient security forces and opening more police outposts in vulnerable areas. CEM, also appealed to the Chief Minister to constitute a high-level judicial enquiry commission and to arrest the criminals involved in the recent ghastly massacre of innocent people and to provide sufficient compensation to riot-hit victim families. Apart from this, the NCHAC has also requested to provide adequate security in trains and buses for smooth transportation of essential commodities in the district and free movement of people in rail and roads. Turning to
long pending development needs of the hill district, Purnendu Langthasa
asked Chief Minister Gogoi to allot adequate funds especially for the
employment generating schemes, so that the tribal youths may not feel
isolated from the mainstream. He voiced concern over ‘the poor health’ of
vital links like Haflong-Silchar Road, Haflong-Lumding Road, Haflong-Lanka
Road and Haflong-Umrangso Road. These are our which are the lifeline of
North Cachar Hills. |
