A month after a high velocity thunder squall made them homeless, 700 families of Manchachar (Dhubri) are yet to get a roof over their head. The government has no money to help them. Funds crunch, it is said, is really severe. So far the government has managed to put up some tin sheds under the Centrally-sponsored Indira Awas Yojana. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Ajad Ali Seikh says the State Government was going to submit a special rural shelter scheme under the PMGY seeking Central assistance for reconstructing of the damaged houses. The scheme is being prepared by Dhubri District Rural Development Agency (DRDA). The squall affected people have since left the relief camps and are trying to get on with life at their native places against all the odds. However,
not so long ago, assurances and promises poured in from all possible
quarters that rehabilitation of the victims of the nature’s fury would not
be a problem. But the plight of the storm-affected people in Dhubri district
of Assam only shows that these days’ promises are made to be broken. |
