Gun selling Policeman arrested A policeman in Mizoram has been arrested for selling a 9mm bore sten gun to a Myanmar national. Along with the policeman, a Myanmar national, P S Thanga, had also been arrested. The gun was seized from Thanga’s possession. The Myanmar national had reportedly confessed during interrogation that the gun was sold to him by Mizoram Armed police personnel Lalropianga for Rs 50,000. Following Thanga's statement, the police arrested Lalropianga. The police are also investigating whether more police personnel are involved in gun smuggling. Arrested policeman Lalropinga (46) was formerly a member of a militant outfit called Hmar People's Convention before he surrendered to the civil authorities in 1991. He was later inducted into the police armory department. The arrest of Lalropinga on allegation oif selling guns might just be the tip of the iceberg as insiders in the State police department claimed that more than 12 sten guns had gone missing. However, top police officials denied any knowledge of arms missing from the armoury. The issue of missing guns became political
when Mizoram People's Conference party has slammed the ruling MNF government
for ''failing to maintain law and order''.In a statement, the MPC stated
''the missing guns from police headquarters are a very serious matter and it
is an indication of the administrative failure of the MNF government.''The
Zoram Nationalist Party also came down heavily on the government, demanding
the resignation of Home Minister Tawnluia, for the incident. The Union Home
Ministry had sanctioned 300 AK-47 assault rifles to the state police, in
addtion to the 100 given lastyear, under the Mizoram Police Modernisation
Scheme. |
