Kohli’s remarks spraks off controversy Governors usually toe
State Government’s line. Seldom in independent India has any governor
entered into a row with the ruling party in a state. However of late the
governors seem to break this tradition. On January 26, the Bihar governor
had criticised the Rabri government for the deteriorating law and order in
the State. Mizoram Governor A. R. Kohli recently sparked off a controversy,
which has threatened to snowball into a major one with the Assam government
demanding his removal. The governor, participating in a seminar organised by
the North East Chamber of Commerce and Industries (NECCI), has described the
North-East as the ‘’most spoilt child’’ in the country. which had not been
able to handle the care shown by the Centre. Mr Kohli said,’’This may sound
a bit strange...I do not agree that the North-East is the most neglected
region. It is in fact the most spoilt child in the country.’’ This has not
gone down well with the Assam government, which has been using every
opportunity to ‘’shout from the rooftop’’how they had been ‘’systematically
denied’’during the last five years by the NDA government.of
industrialisation in the region. This has also antagonised regional forces
like All Assam Students Union (AASU). |
