Come, study in Britain British High Commissioner to India Sir Rob Young has urged the students of the North-East to study in his country. He visited Guwahati along with his Deputy High Commissioner Dr Andrew Hall. He said "currently more than 11,000 students from India are studying in the British Universities. We are keen to have more students from all over India, certainly the northeast". Sir Young also urged the students to avail the scholarships being offered in the United Kingdom. The High Commissioner, however, ruled out any special consideration for the North-East students and said that merit would be the only criteria for the scholarships. The High Commissioner said, "It’s indeed heartening to see states like Mizoram which have had a turbulent past due to insurgency trotting the path of peace. However, this region can develop in the true sense only if it creates required infrastructure for development." Expressing Britain’s willingness to aid the developmental activities in the NE region, he said his country will be keen to offer help particularly in the fields of education, health and social empowerment. He nevertheless ruled out Britain undertaking any specific project in the North- East in the immediate future.
Beyond doubt, Sir Young’s call will provide
a much needed boost for the North-Eastern students, who often had to give up
higher studies because of lack of facilities. |
