The Bhutanese Government has set a deadline of June 15 for all underground outfits fighting against India to leave the kingdom or else the royal force would drive them out physically. North Bengal Divisional Commissioner Debaditya Chakraborty said since the beginning of activity of Kamtapuri Liberation Organization (KLO), Bhutan soil was considered a safe haven for KLO activists of North Bengal and Bodo and ULFA militants of Assam. Neighbouring Bhutan jungles considered a safe hideouts of many militant groups of India, Mr Chakraborty said. The "hit and run" policy of the underground outfits was successful, to some extent, due to proximity of jungles in Bhutan. Many arrested militants confessed that they were trained in the KLO hideouts in Bhutan territory and police could not take action as after operation, they generally took shelter in the neighbouring country. Mr Chakraborty said the latest toughening stance of the Bhutan Government on the outfits was after New Delhi’s request to Thimpu. The West Bengal Government had pleaded with the Centre to negotiate with the Bhutan Government on the activity of KLO in the neighbouring land. "Now the Bhutanese
Government is serious in weeding out the militants from its territory", Mr
Chakraborty said. Some years ago, the New Delhi did not allow any fugitive
of Bhutanese of Nepali origin to take shelter in Indian territory and fight
against the king for democratic rights. |
