A
five-member University Grants Commission (UGC) team headed by Professor
Brig. Brij Kishore visited the 1000 acre Mizoram University site at Tanhril
area and the 700 acre Pachunga University College in Aizawl recently. The
expert team from New Delhi called on Governor A. R. Kohli, Chief Minister
Zoramthanga and Chief Secretary H. V. Lalringa with the purpose of their
visit to initiate concrete suggestion and plans for strengthening and
development of the Mizoram University. Notably, the UGC expert team has been
so constituted to address issues and concerns of the Mizoram University
which was established in July last year. Earlier,
the expert team was accorded a warm welcome by the Vice Chancellor of the
Mizoram University and his colleagues and leaders of the Mizo Students’
Union (MSU) when they arrived at Lengpui airport. Addressing
a press conference at the State Guest House in Aizawl, team leader Prof
Kishore said it was proposed to introduce and develop a non-conventional,
broad based course so as to help meet the socio-economic requirements of
Mizoram and the kind of education which aims at enhancing employment
opportunities and improve the quality of the life of Mizo people. It may be
mentioned here that the University has a budget allocation of Rs. 75 crore
under the 9th and 10th Plans and another Rs. 25 crore under the NLP fund,
all of which remained undistributed. Referring
to the existing buildings at Tanhril, the expert team announced that a very
impressive university building will be constructed on the latest
architectural design. Prof. Kishore pointed out that initially the focus
would be on strengthening the existing departments which have been inherited
from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). “There will be no financial
constraints for the development of the young Mizoram University so as to
fulfil and satisfy the aspirations of Mizo people ,” Prof Brij assured. |
