Jamir discusses Naga peace move with Advani Ceasefire with NSCN (K) extended

Nagaland Chief Minister S. C. Jamir recently met Home Minister L. K. Advani and is understood to have held detailed discussions on the Naga peace process. The Home Minister also reviewed the law-and-order situation in the State, besides discussing issues concerning the Naga peace process. The process has been going on at a smooth pace with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee meeting the two top leaders of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Issak-Muivah) at Osaka, Japan last December. However, the State Government has been insisting that the other faction led by Khaplang be included in the peace talks.

Acceptance of the State Government’s demand to include NSCN (Khaplang) could annoy the NSCN (IM) which is a bigger and more powerful group in the North-East, the sources said, adding, this could prove detrimental to the peace process. In the recent past the NSCN (IM) and the security forces have blamed each other for violation of the ceasefire accord. This, the sources said, could affect the ongoing process of talks.

Meanwhile, the ongoing ceasefire between the Centre and the NSCN (K) has been extended for one more year. This was announced by Union Home Minister L. K. Advani. The ceasefire between the Centre and the NSCN (K) came  into force since April 28, 2001. Both the sides have expressed satisfaction over the progress of the ongoing ceasefire.
