Manipur CM for
crackdown on ultras
An all-party delegation barring the BJP
urged Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to mount a crackdown on all outlaw
groups including the NSCN operating on National Highway 39. The delegation
was headed by Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh. The delegation
also called on Deputy Prime Minister, has demanded securing NH 39 that is
the State’s lifeline by deploying Highway Protection Force. They also
demanded upgradation of Jiribam-Imphal portion of NH 53 to four-lane as an
alternate road link between Manipur and Assam. Manipur Chief Minister said
that they failed to fathom how the NSCN(I-M) and Khaplang could indulge
openly in illegal activities like extortions and kidnappings when the
Government of India has a ceasefire pact with the two factions.
NRL’s contribution
to CM’s fund
Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and its
employees have donated an amount of Rs 13.80 lakh to Assam Chief Minister’s
Relief Fund. At a meeting held recently at Assam Bhavan, Delhi, B. K. Das,
Managing Director, NRL along with some senior officials of the NRL handed
over the cheque to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. While expressing their
concern about the devastation caused by the recent floods in the State, the
employees of NRL considered it as a moral duty to extend help to the flood
effected people by way of contribution of one day’s salary amounting to Rs
3.80 lakh. The company’s contribution to the relief fund is Rs 10 lakh.
Mizo voters to
get photo ID
All eligible voters in Mizoram
will get photo identity cards before December. The Election Commission had
ordered issuance of the cards to the voters based on the voters’ list on
January one, 2002. The State Government had advertised for filling up posts
of cameraman and assistant cameraman on temporary basis to take photographs
of voters at their respective polling stations. Chief Electoral Office
Lalmalswawma requested the voters to turn up at the specified places to
assist photographers. The CEO urged all political parties and NGOs to
cooperate in ensuring smooth completion of the process. There are 4,81,824
voters in Mizoram as against 4,67,976 on January one, 2001.

challenged to participate in Busan Games
Moirangthem Inao a physically
challenged sportsperson from Masnipur will represent India in the Busan 8th
Fespie games 2002. The games to be held at Busan South Korea from October 26
to November 1.
Friendly insects
introduced in Tripura
The Tripura Government has
introduced two eco-friendly insects on experimental basis to enhance
agricultural production in the State. The Bio-insects, known as Tricogramma
and Tricodarmma, will destroy stem borer and fungi respectively and enhance
production. State Agriculture Minister Aghore Debbarma launched the
programme at Dukli block by distributing eggs of Tricogramma and Tricodarmma
to 25 farmers. These insects are produced at a bio-control laboratory in
Badharghat. Depending on the success of the project, similar bio-control
mechanism will also be introduced in other parts of the State. On the newly
launched project, he said only Rs. 25 to 30 wouldl be required to cover 0.40
acre of land for using bio-insects which was cheaper than the chemical
pesticides and pollution free. Mr. Deb Barma said the State was self
sufficient in providing certified seeds to the farmers.
‘Manipur has great
tourism potential’
Manipur has an enormous tourism
potential but is difficult to develop unless peace prevails in the region,
according to the British High Commissioner to India, Sir Rob Young. Mr.
Young, who was recently in Manipur on a two-day visit, said that Manipur has
many wonderful things and places to see and visit.
Mithi stresses yak
preservation
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister
Mukut Mithi has stressed the need for preservation of yak and assured the
people of all possible help by the government. Appreciating the initiative
taken by Dirang-based National Research Centre on Yak, the Chief Minister
asked the director of the centre to submit a detailed project on yak to the
State Government. He also assured them of taking up construction of Mohan
Camp Tom road for developing communication facilities in the area. The Chief
Minister was addressing a farmers training on yak at Nyakmadung near Dirang
in West Kameng district.
Assam Rifles
donates sewing machines
The Seventh Assam Rifles,
stationed at Jairampur in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, has
donated knitting and sewing machines to the R K Mossang Memorial Society and
Stillwel club in recognition of their social services. The machines were
recently handed over at function at Jairampur which was graced by Minister
of state for Public Works Department Setong Sena along with DIG Assam
Rifles..
Former Manipur MLA
shot at
Nodiyachand, a former MLA, was
shot at by armed miscreants near Lamphel morgue area in Manipur’s Imphal
West district. He was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Science
for treatment, where his condition stated to be critical.
31 AK 56 rifles
unearthed in Assam
In a major arms haul the security
forces recovered thirty-one AK 56 rifles from Upper Assam’s Tinsukia
district. The rifles were suspected to have been buried by the ULFA four
years back. A joint security team comprising of police, army and CRPF raided
a hideout in Borgora area under Sadia sub-division and recovered the rifles
and 56 magazines from the site.
CM inspects Khuman
Lampak
Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi
Singh, youth affairs and sports minister A. Aza, commissioner dept of YAS,
director N Sunderlal and other officials visited the Khuman Lampak ground to
oversee the preparations for the forthcoming 58th all India national senior
men football tourney 2002 for Santosh Trophy. AMFA has selected four
grounds for playing the Santosh Trophy 2002. They are Khuman Lampak, Mapal
Kangjeibung, Eastern Sporting Union of Wangkhei and Thangemiband Athletics
Union of Thangmeiband. The CM said that Manipur wanted to host the Santosh
trophy in a grandiose manner and hence no effort should be spared to make
the evtn a memorable one.The chief minister also assured all support from
his side for the smooth conduct of the championship.
Two ULFA militants
killed in Assam
Two militants belonging to the
banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were killed in an ambush at
Barbathargaon, under Goreswar police station in Kamrup district in Assam.
Army’s Red Horn division laid an ambush on a track reportedly used by ULFA
cadres. Subsequently, two cadres were killed in the encounter, which lasted
for over half an hour. Meanwhile, one 8mm Rifle, one magazine, some assorted
ammunitions, one 303 Revolver, two Chinese Grenades, eleven detonators and a
diary have been recovered from the slain militants.
East zone ULFA
commander remanded to police custody
Ramu Mech, Commandant of the
banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), in charge of East zone, a top
ULFA leader and a trusted lieutenant of its chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa
arrested from a private nursing home in Dibrugarh was remanded to seven days
police custody by the Sibsagar chief judicial magistrate along with his
bodyguard Ranjit Rajkhowa alias Bhaiti alias Jyoti.
Bio-chemical system
of medicine prohibited
The Chairman, Board of
Homoeopthic Medicine, Meghalaya, Shillong has informed that the practice of
Bio-chemical system of medicine as a branch of Alternative Medicine on the
strength of registration on the qualification awarded by the Council of
Alternative System of Medicine, Kolkata and RMP council of India is not
recognised by the Government of India and the State Government.
Ultras surrender
Five underground cadres belonging
to different factions surrendered before the Commandant of 10 Assam Rifles
at a simple ceremony held at the tactical headquarters at Dhansiri in
Dimapur. Five cadres who surrendered, three belonged to NSCN (IM) while one
was from NSCN(K) and the other from ULFA. The surrendered arms included one
.32 revolver, two 9 mm pistols, one shot-gun, six hand grenades and 19
rounds of assorted ammunition.
Kaziranga to open from Oct 10
The Kaziranga National Park,
famed for the one-horned rhino and several other endangered species, will
open for tourists from October 10 next, the Park’s Divisional Forest Officer
said.
Children’s writer dead
Noted children’s writer and
National award winner Sarat Chandra Dutta died at his Tarajan. He was 74 and
is survived by his wife and two sons. Dutta received the National award for
children’s writing for his book Haladhar Gayon and also won a state level
award for his book on agriculture titled Krishi Bapuram.
