Nagaland Chief Minister S. C. Jamir urged the Centre to ensure that the ceasefire ground rules with Naga underground groups be enforced in totality so that the ensuing assembly polls were conducted in a free and fair manner. He had made the plea to Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani to enforce ceasefire ground rules in letter and spirit in view of the animosity between rival underground groups which recently vitiated the “relative” peaceful atmosphere of Nagaland, Mr. Jamir said. The Chief Minister said that it was his top priority to restore normalcy so that the people can exercise their franchise without any fear from the underground activists. The Chief Minister also
called upon the underground groups to adhere to the ceasefire ground rules.
“I fervently appeal to underground groups to strictly adhere to the agreed
ground rules and go back to their designated camps”, he said while
addressing officials at a meeting. Mr. Jamir also refuted reports appearing
in a section of press that in a memorandum to Advani he insisted on
continuation of ban on NSCN (I-M) under the provision of Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act. With the present ban on the outfit to expire in November,
NSCN (I-M) leadership has been insisting that this restriction be lifted to
ensure free passage for them as they agreed “on principle” to come over to
India and hold political-level talks. | Nagaland | North East Enquirer (Headlines) | Nena Home Page | |
