RAMRA ready for a cause Members of the Peace Accord Mizo National Front Returnees Association (RAMRA) were willing and ready to launch an operation to rescue K Lalengzama abducted by dacoits near Lumsnong in Meghalaya and asked the Mizoram Home department to provide arms. The 22-year old youth has since been released but the RAMRA is still in the news. According to the police, RAMRA asked for five AK-47 assault rifles, two pistols, 100 hand grenades and Rs 10,000 in cash for the rescue operation. The police officials were not amused. They termed the idea as “ridiculous”. RAMRA line is simple and straight: “We are volunteering because we have a 20-year expertise in guerrilla warfare and we want to put our expertise for a good cause”. Lalengzama was travelling to Guwahati from Aizawl in a maxi cab when he was ‘abducted’ by six dacoits, who robbed him and other passengers in the vehicle of their belongings. The dacoits contacted his family and demanded a ransom of ransom of Rs. 10 lakh Case against JD (U): A criminal case was registered at the Aizawl police station against leaders of the Mizoram Janata Dal (United) for issuing a press release that has the potential to inflame communal passions. Police officials, however, said that they had not yet arrested the JD (U) leaders. In the press statement they delivered “a quit Mizoram order” to all non-tribal suppliers and contractors and set September 15 as the deadline for the departure. The JD (U) reportedly charged that non-tribal suppliers and contractors had been suppressing the rights of the native Mizos in government supply and contract works. Son of the soil and oursiders conflict is not new in the North-East. As a
matter of fact, the historic Assam Movement started on the pretext of
removing foreigners from the State. Following the movement, other
North-Eastern states have kept on demanding the same. |
