Media manipulated facts of history, accuses NPMHR Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) secretary general N. Krome has criticised a section of the media for twisting and manipulating facts about the vexed Naga issue. In a statement, Mr. Krome stated that "Of late, the media of all shades and shapes have made the Naga issue a hunting ground, following the vibrations that have rocked not only the hills and valleys of the region but even to the corridors of Indias most powerful seats in Delhi. During the last 54 years of our political struggle we have not received as much attention as of now perhaps, at least from the Indian media." "Our deepest thanks and appreciations to all members of the media for the ventures made who sincerely tried to understand our problem and are trying to project it in the same manner." "At the same time, one also cannot forget the fact how some section of the media have twisted and manipulated facts of history with total disregard to the untold human sufferings attached to it. Even our immediate experience shows how words were put into mouths that tried to befriend the media, which were further manipulated by reading between the lines and concluding with their own assumptions. Creating sensational news and blowing things out of proportion may sell well and give good reading. But the price people pay for the ambition of one or two media persons is intolerable and irreparable." "The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR), and the Naga Students Federation (NSF), wish to set records straight once and for all that at no time have we said that sovereignty cannot be achieved or that our struggle have been in vain, not to talk of questioning the credentials of the leaderships of the struggle on whom we have vested all hopes for our future." "We have on the other hand acknowledged that people have suffered untold violence because of the struggle and mentioned the underlying needs to resolve our problems through peaceful means without compromising our principles. It is also a fact that Nagas are divided on various lines, which is nothing abnormal or surprising, as can be seen from the histories of any struggling nations including India when it fought the British for her freedom. Therefore, it need not be construed to mean that the Naga national leaders have no following of the people. Rather, there are no two opinions among Nagas on the cause they stand for." "In fact, the very foundation of our organisations such as the NPMHR and NSF are based on our political struggle with clear-cut ideas about ourselves as a distinct people with the unquestionable right to determine ourselves according to our own genius. Therefore, our democratic and peaceful approach towards realisation of our aspirations cannot be interpreted to mean that we are forgetting the 54 years of struggle and to compromise with our rights. We have always stood for the truth and we will always strive to achieve our rightful place as equal people in the world with honour, pride and dignity." "While expressing our continued support to the
on-going peace process, we shall not accept any piecemeal solution, which does not
recognise the rights of the Naga people that may tantamount to further suppression and
colonisation of our people. We would like to also take this opportunity to appeal to the
conscience of the Indian public as well as Nagas not to be swayed with cheap propagandas
and disinformation which have always been used and perpetuated to create confusions and
misunderstandings among people, veiling the truth that prevail in our land." |
