NSCN (IM) demands Rs. 50 lakh as extortion from OIL This is the first time, since its inception in 1959, that the OIL has received a demand letter from an extremist organisation in the North-East.Premier oil exploring agency in the country, Oil India Limited (OIL) has been served an extortion note of Rs. 60 lakh by the banned NSCN (IM). This is the first time, since its inception in 1959, that the OIL has received a demand from an extremist organisation in the North-Eastern region. After receiving the extortion note, operations at Khumsai oil-well in Chanlang district of Arunachal Pradesh has been suspended. The OIL has also pulled out most of the 130 employees working there except a handful of guards. The OIL has already taken up the matter with the Centre. The Khumsai oil-well produces about 100 kls of crude per day which will result in a production loss of worth Rs. 20-30 crore annually. Production in Khagorijan oil-well on the bank of Brahmaputra in Tinsukia district has also remained suspended since August 1999 owing to law-and-order problem. The local public there, who are suffering from severe erosion by the Brahmaputra, thought it prudent to pressurise the Centre to build an embankment by holding the OIL as hostage. They would not allow the OIL to operate till the embankment is built. For this, the OIL is facing a production loss of 100 kls per day. The extortion notice is a clear violation of the ground rules agreed upon by the NSCN (IM). |
