NPC sever ties with Manipur Govt. as a sign of protest

Naga People’s Convention (NPC) has decided to snap ties with the Manipur Government in protest against the Centre’s decision to limit the ceasefire with NSCN (IM) to Nagaland only. The two-day NPC meeting in Manipur’s Senapati district was held under the aegis of United Naga Council (UNC). The convention decided not to pay taxes to the Government and asked educational institutions in some Hill districts to withdraw their affiliation from State Board of  Secondary Education and Manipur University, UNC sources said. The convention, sources said, also endorsed the resolution adopted by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on the integration of Naga contiguous areas.

The convention held in the backdrop of the agitation launched by several Manipur-based Naga organisations immediately after the rollback of the Bangkok  Agreement on July 27, asserted that Nagas had the right to live as one people under one administrative set-up and urged the Centre to make serious efforts towards finding a permanent settlement of the vexed Naga political problem.

The convention was attended by representatives from over 15 tribes, several NGOs, human  rights bodies, women’s organisations, student associations, Mao Baptist Church here under the aegis of United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur, its president Paul Leo said.

It appreciated the solidarity expressed to the Naga cause by non-Naga organisations both in the country and
abroad and affirmed commitment to come to  a mutual understanding with neighbouring communities in the greater interest of peace. In another resolution, the convention called upon all  Nagas underground groups for rapprochement by sinking their differences and work together to ‘enhance the national cause.’
