Medical professionals in Nagaland are at the receiving end from both undergrounds and security personnel, affecting the health care delivery system in this State. Besides intimidating and threatening the doctors to pay 'taxes' by the underground of late, they became the victims of even State police personnel. Close on the heels of kidnapping of a dentist at Dimapur, State police commandos severely assaulted a senior doctor of Naga Civil Hospital, Kohima, forcing the medical fraternity of the institute to resort to a 'lightning strike' by closing down the OPD of the premier hospital of the State. The agitating doctors alleged that police commandos assaulted and attempted to kill Dr. Sentimeren Aonok near TCP gate when he was in a hurry to attend an emergency operation. The hospital doctors also resolved that if their demands to punish the culprits responsible for the unprovoked act were not met their stir would continue indefinitely paralysing even the emergency wards. But IGP (law-and-order) N. N. Walling assured the doctors of initiating 'appropriate actions' against the erring police personnel, adding, the commandos were already taken into custody and subsequently disarmed. The IGP also personally went to the Naga hospital and tendered apology on behalf of the police department for the unfortunate incident. The incident occurred at TCP traffic point when police personnel were frisking vehicles on account of Defence Minister George Fernandes' visit to Kohima. Meanwhile, Nagaland Doctors' Association expressed deep concern over
unabated threats, kidnappings, intimidations and extortion in the State, saying such
activities totally eroded and destroyed the morale of the Naga society. |
