Security alert against arms smuggling

Border police outposts along the 710-km long Mizoram-Myanmar-Bangladesh border areas have been alerted following reports of huge arms shipment arriving at Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh meant for north-eastern insurgents. Senior police officials said recently that security along the border areas was beefed up after the Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Mizoram Government that a cache of arms worth about 75,000 dollars had arrived at Cox’s Bazar recently. The consignment comprised AK series assault rifles, M-16 rifles, rocket launchers and Chinese-made high explosive hand grenades, the Home Ministry reports said. The Police said the North-East insurgents like that of the NSCN, Manipur’s PLA, PREPAK, Kuki National Army (KNA) and National Liberation Front of Tripura were the likely recipients of the consignment. Quoting intelligence reports, the police officials said that while there had been no information of movement of insurgents in large groups along the borders areas, a mixed group of insurgents belonging to the NSCN, PLA and KNA were reported to be camping at Myanmar-Mizoram border areas. Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, widely regarded as "arms bazar" is a port where sea pirates from far eastern countries bring arms for sale
