Vijay Divas celebrated in Tripura

Vijay Diwas was celebrated in Tripura to commemorate the memories of the brave soldiers of the Indian Army who laid down their lives in the Bangladesh Liberation War. On December 16, 1971, India achieved its second victory over Pakistan. To commemorate the memories of those who laid down their lives, a wreath laying ceremony was organised at the War Memorial in Lichu Banganand at post office Chowmuhani in Agartala. Tripura Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) K. M. Seth, Education Minister Anil Sarkar and State First Lady Bina Seth laid the wreaths in memory of the slain soldiers. Brig. B. K. Ponwar, commander, 21 Sector, who took part in the Bangladesh Liberation War and was present on December 16, 1971 at Dhaka as a Second Lieutenant along with his battalion at the time of surrender, laid the wreath in remembrance of the brave soldiers who laid down their ‘today’ for the future of that country.

The function was attended by troops stationed at Agartala. The second Indo-Pak War commenced on December 3, 1971, in both the sectors. In lighting and swift operations which lasted for precisely 12 days, the brave Indian soldiers created history by liberating Bangladesh and taking over one lakh Pakistani soldiers as prisoners of war. "This remains unparalleled in the world history. No other country has accomplished so much in such a short span of time," an Assam Rifles press release said.
