TUJS demands separate State

The Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti has sought formation of a separate state comprising the areas of the Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council. TUJS general secretary Rabindra Debbarma said the decision was taken to protect the tribals.

AIDS menace grips Manipur

At least 96 people have died of AIDS in Manipur until September this year. At least 350 HIV positive and 334 AIDS cases have been reported during the period.

Arms smugglers arrested

The police arrested two suspected arms smugglers and recovered two G-3 rifles, one AK-47 rifle and about 760 rounds of ammunition during a raid recently at Lungnit in Assam.

UNLF activist killed

A United Liberation Front activist, K. Indrasen Singh, who was out on bail, has been killed by some unidentified miscreants in Imphal West district in Manipur.

AGP leader gunned down

President of the Naharbari Anchalik unit of the Asom Gana Parishad, Mohammed Ismail Ali, was killed by a group of five unidentified gunmen. Ali had closed his shop and was about to return home when he was stabbed to death at Salmari village in Sonitpur district recently.

BTF commander arrested

Bimal Burman, the district action commander of the BTF, was arrested from Suklaipaa village under Tangla police station in Darrang district recently.

Jawan killed

An Army jawan and an underground activist were killed when militants ambushed an Army patrol at Tonsen Lage area in Thoubal district.Official reports said an Army patrol, on duty in the area, about 55 km. south-west of Imphal, was attacked by militants armed with automatic weapons. While Darshan Singh died on the spot, another jawan, Prem Singh, was seriously injured. Minutes after the attack, a militant was killed when security forces launched search operations in the area.

Church closure

The Catholic Church today closed down one of its missions in Dhyubri district following the abduction of a priest.Father Thomas D'Silva, a young priest heading the Bashbari Catholic Mission, was kidnapped on November 16 from Horkum village and has been missing ever since.Police suspect that he was kidnapped by Adivasi militants. The decision to close the mission was taken at an emergency meeting in Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district recently.

Army stand

The Army clarified that there was no nexus between them and the Bodo Liberation Tiger Force militants.A release issued by the 4 Corps claimed that during the past week, it has carried out a series of offensives against the BLTF.
