World Bank grant for Cachar roads

At last, there is good news for the people of Barak Valley who are fed up with bad roads. The World Bank has granted a soft loan of Rs. 13.21 crore to widen and repair six key rural roads in Cachar district of South Assam. The loan is part of the bank's global scheme to tone up rural infrastructure in under developed countries.

The road projects selected under the scheme include the 174 km Silchar-Jowai- National Highway 44, the Sonai Motinagar-Didarkhush Road along the south-eastern flanks of Cachar district and the Kathogorah-Harinagar Road along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The State PWD and the Assam Rural Infrastructure and Agriculture Services Project (ARIASP) would execute the road projects. Snow Mountains Engineering Company, an Australian firm is the consultant for the project. Meanwhile, the cash-strapped Assam Government has sought help from the public sector Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and the tea corporate houses urging them to invest in the repair of key roads in the districts.
