AASU allays minority communities fear The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has urged the minority communities not to panic by saying that its demand for deportation of outsiders from the State is not meant for the genuine Indian citizens but against the outsiders. Clarifying AASU's stand on the issue of deportation of the outsiders, outgoing president Sarbanada Sonowal said that the problem of illegal infiltration was a serious one and all communities should strive to find a solution to the problem. He also assured security to all the genuine Indian citizens in the State. Briefing on the AASU's annual conference, Mr. Sonowal said that his organisation believed in the policy of accommodation and adjustment rather than confrontation. He said that the AASU wanted all ethnic and linguistic groups to share a common platform and that is why the students body invited all ethnic groups in its open session. Representatives of the All Koch-Rajbanshi Students' Union, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad, Tai Ahom Students' Union, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, All Moran Students' Union, Mottock Yuba Chatra Parishad, All Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association, North East Students' Organisation and the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union were present in the open session. In the open session the AASU appealed all ethnic and linguistic groups to work unitedly for the development of the State. Secretary-general of the North East Students Organisation A. A. Shimrey has appealed to the youths of the State to go to the fields and work instead of depending on government dole and easy money. He resented over the fact that agriculture had not been given due importance in school curriculum. He further said that the existing education system was tailor-made for clerical jobs. AASU's annual conference discussed many issues including the need for quality education in the State. The students body has drafted an education policy on the basis of the recommendations made by the education commission headed by former Dibrugarh University vice-chancellor and noted academic Kamaleswar Bora. |
