Indian proposal on goods movement finds favour with B'desh

Bangladesh’s Commerce Ministry has favoured the Cabinet’s decision on the latest Indian proposal of movement of goods from one point in India to another through the former’s territory by Bangladesh carriers.

Quoting Ministry sources, the Sangbad daily said that this alternative proposal from India in place of land transit to carry Indian goods to its North-Eastern states had apparently been found to be a profitable proportion by the ministry. The cabinet would take a decision on the proposal soon, sources said. In its note sent to the cabinet, the Ministry had stated that the proposal when implemented, would strengthen the Bangladeshi transport sector and create employment opportunities.

Meanwhile, secretary to the Commerce Ministry Sayed Alamgir Faruque Chowdhury has said that "we are examining the proposal and it needs the approval of the Cabinet. The proposal is very important to us, besides the border trade with India," he said.

Under the proposal, the goods to be carried by Indian vehicles would be first unloaded at the Petrapol-Hilli-Darshana border point in West Bengal. From there, they are proposed to be carried through Bangladesh carriers for unloading them at the other points in India.

Mr. Chowdhury said the joint meeting of the experts from two countries, expected to be held in New Delhi by the end of this month or early next month, would discuss the modalities of the initiation of border trade and also the latest proposal on movement of goods.
