Jamir calls for tight vigil over ISI in NE

Nagaland Chief Minister S. C. Jamir has called for strict vigil in the North-East to thwart any possible stepping up of activities by Pakistan’s ISI in this region. "It is almost certain that the ISI and their cohorts will now step up their activities in the entire region by giving material as well as moral support to insurgent groups", he said. In the context of post-Kargil development, it is now necessary to keep utmost vigil ‘on our part’, particularly on the issue of strengthening the intelligence network, Mr. Jamir asserted.

"We should not be caught napping in sensitive matters," he cautioned. Referring to the continuing withdrawal of the Army from Nagaland for the Kargil operation, the Chief Minister cautioned that decreasing presence of the Army might be fully utilised by various insurgent outfits in the State. The Centre should ensure that the mistake of 1989 when the Eighth Mountain Division stationed in Nagaland had to be withdrawn for similar circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir should not be repeated. Meanwhile, the ruling Congress in Nagaland has urged the Centre to shift the Naga Regiment’s headquarters from Uttar Pradesh to the State.
