Militancy to be dealt with firmly: Mawlong

Meghalaya Chief Minister E. K. Mawlong said that the government would firmly deal with the problem of militancy. Replying to a question of K. C. Bro (Congress), Mr. Mawlong said he had invited militants of the entire State to come to the negotiation table, but had not received any response from them. When Bro wanted to know from the Minister of State for Home R. A. Lyngdoh whether the government would invite the Achik National Volunteer Council to talks, he said "This is the only way, but the organisation is not yet banned."

Replying to a question raised by R. G. Lyngdoh (Congress) as to why no action was taken against them, the Minister of State for Home said, "They are our brothers and sons." When the same Congress member wanted to know whether other brothers and sons in the State should also take up arms if the government failed to take firm steps to deal with the insurgents, the Chief Minister replied that militancy in the State would be dealt with a firm hand.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister E. K. Mawlong said his Government was determined to take effective steps to check the rise of such incidents which tarnish the image of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).

Replying to a Zero Hour call attention motion, the Chief Minister told the Assembly that he was concerned at allegations that some appointments were done through unfair means, the examinations of which were conducted by the MPSC. Mawlong said the State Government recognised and respected the autonomous nature of the MPSC as a constitutional body and also the constitutional provisions governing the appointment and tenure of the members of the MPSC. Earlier, while moving the motion, Syiem had said that question papers of the MPSC examinations were leaked out and there were some underhand dealings in the appointments.

Tea production: Production of tea on an experimental basis by Meghalaya government has yielded encouraging results, State Agriculture Minister M Suchiang told the State Assembly. The production of green tea leaves which started in three experimental centres in 1998 had yielded 194,518 kg so far in a total area of 60.23 hectares, Suchiang said. He said cultivation had been taken up in 54.50 hectares at Umsning Tea Experimental Centre in Ri-Bhoi district, 3.01 hectares to the Rongram Centre in West Garo Hills district and 2.72 hectares at Riangdo Centre in West Khasi hills district.
