Lt. Kengurutse paid homage on death anniversary

Rich tributes were paid to Lt Naikezhakuo Kengurutse (MVC), who was killed while fighting intruders in forward areas of Jammu and Kashmir during Kargil operations last year. Senior Army officials, family members, villagers, friends and church workers placed wreaths on his grave at a sleepy village, 16 km from Kohima, where a memorial park is also being constructed.

Lt. Kengurutse along with 22 other soldiers from 2nd Rajputana Rifles, was killed during recapturing of a lone hill in Batalic sub-sector on June 29 last year.

As a fitting tribute to the valiant soldier, family members and well-wishers decided to construct a memorial and a park at the burial site near NH-62 at a cost of Rs. 6.50 lakh. The late soldier’s brother said that the State Government had provided employment to one of his sisters in the State police department and assured Rs. 1 lakh from district plan fund to complete the monument. Assam Rifles has also offered help for early construction of the monument, he said.

Two other soldiers from Nagaland had also died during the operations while three were seriously injured during Operation Vijay.The 2nd battalion of Naga Regiment, headquartered at Ranikhet, received the Chief of Army Staff special citation for their performance during the Kargil operation.
