Tripura Governor appeals for peace

New Tripura Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Krishna Mohan Seth appealed the militant organisations to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream. Lt Gen. (Retd.) K. M. Seth was administered oath of office by Gauhati High Court Justice N. C. Jain in a simple function at Raj bhawan in Agartala."Gun and force never bring any solution to any problem," he said. The Governor added, "the extremists should sit in the negotiation table and discuss their grievances within the frame work of the Constitution".

Lt. Gen. Seth said that he would visit the affected areas and relief camps at the earliest and would try to have a first hand knowledge of their problems and the prevailing situation. He said, "I read the happenings of the state in newspapers in Delhi and now I will know the ground reality".

The new Governor has maintained that as far as counter insurgency operations is concerned, the present strength of the security forces is adequate and what is needed is to utilise the force effectively. He said, "whatsoever knowledge I have about counter insurgency operations, I will definitely share with the State Government." He also said that he was not the first the Governor with an army background and claimed to be well aware of the situation of the State during 1988 in when TNV surrendered as he was posted at Ukhrul in Manipur.

The Governor said, "I’ve got great faith in the people of the North-East and everyone who knows me is aware of my sincerity and if you are sincere then problems will be sorted out".He described his appointment as the Governor as "God’s wish" and also said "I do have any alliance with any political parties."

Lt. Gen. Seth further said that people of various ethnic groups had been living in peace in the State for centuries and only recently militancy has emerged to hinder the process of development in the State.He urged the various multinational companies and business giants to invest in Tripura and exploit vast natural resources of the region and to take advantage of the liberalisation process. He urged the people to convey the rich cultural ethos of the State to the entire country and expressed the need to develop the State into a tourist resort.

The Governor also said that owing to its location and absence of better transit route, the State continues to suffer and he will do his best to utilise his capacity for opening up new avenues of development.Lt. Gen. (Retd.) K. M. Seth is the first retired Armyman after Gen. K. V. Krishna Rao to be nominated to the post of Governor of Tripura. Gen. Rao was in the office from June 14, ’84 to June 16, ’89.

Governor Siddheswar, who has been replaced by K. M. Seth Prasad, had taken the charge on June 16, 1995.
