ULFA helping ISI: Army The Army recently claimed to have collected concrete evidence that the banned ULFA is providing information to Pakistan's ISI on the Army movements from Assam to the operational areas. Talking to news persons in Guwahati, GOC, 4 Corps, Lt. Gen. D.B. Shekatkar said that the Army has intercepted messages in Urdu sent by the ULFA to ISI agents at Karachi, Lahore, Gujrawala, Sialkot and Narowar. ISD calls were made at regular intervals through PCOs and private telephones from Guwahati, Nagaon, Dhubri, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon. He added that the ULFA had decided to pay some money to the Khaplang faction of the NSCN in order to allow their cadres to stay and train at NSCN camps. GOC Shekatkar also said, the Army had been intercepting ULFA's wireless messages suggesting movement of ULFA militants inside Bhutan, and keeping a close watch on them. Pressure has been mounted on the outfit by people of Bhutan to shift their camp. Meanwhile, State Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta appealed to people to cooperate with the government in tackling ISI activities and antinational insurgent groups in the State. Talking to press at Dispur the Chief Minister said, the Indian Army would soon succeed in driving out the intruders from Kargil. The State government has opened an Army Welfare Fund to extend financial assistance to the families of jawans killed in Kargil, the Chief Minister informed. The state government has put its security forces are on maximum alert to ensure continuous vigil on vital installations, including air fields, oil refineries, supply lines, storages and railways and bus stations to thwart any possible sabotage attempt. The government also requested the people to exercise caution while visiting crowded places and alert police in case any unclaimed article, abadoned vehicle or person(s) with suspicious movement were noticed. |
