Seminar on Manipuri spelling The Manipuri Language Development Society recently organised a two-day seminar on Manipuri spelling at Kuki Inn in Imphal.The seminar was inaugurated by former vice-chancellor of the Manipur University Prof. I. S. Khaiden, while Vice-Chancellor of the Manipur University Prof. H. Tombi Singh attended the seminar as chief guest and Prof. M. S. Ningomba of Manipur University presided over the concluding function. Most of the speaker in the seminar stressed that a committee formed by the Manipur Public Service Commission should go into the details of the matter and prescribe the spellings which should be accepted by all Manipuri people. Some of the speakers also observed the need for standard spelling for Meitei martyrs. Dr. W. F. Singh of the Assam University read out a paper titled 'Lon-gi Banan Kanglon 1969: Neinaba Ama'. According to him, the Manipuri language and the Bengali script and as also the Mayek script did not match. He also noted that these posed peculiar difficulties and urged the Manipuri people to evolve a standard speling acceptable to all. Editor of Manipuri monthly Sanathong Manindra, ex-president of of the organisation K. C. Tensuba, head of the department, Linguistics, Manipur University Dr. Ch. Jashawanta Singh, Dr. N. Sarat Chandra, Prof. N. Kunjamohan and W. Tomchou Singh also delivered lectures in the seminar. |
