Statehood agreement not end in itself: Chishi

Newly elected president of the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) K. L. Chishi had said that though the 16-point statehood agreement was a milestone for Nagaland, it should not be conceived as an end in itself. Addressing a press conference recently, Mr. Chishi said the State Government should explore more avenues to increase the State’s own resources without the Centre’s assistance to keep on funding both Plan and non-Plan expenditures of the State, the exploration of mineral resources and privatising or revamping the sick public sector units.

Mr. Chishi, former Chief Minister and Finance Minister, also blamed the State Government for "non-economic programmes", which so far failed to take any programme to boost the State’s resources.

Regarding the continuing peace process in the State, Mr. Chishi said since all the underground factions have a common ideology, there should be unity among the factions.

Regarding the BJP, where 27 NDM members, including some senior leaders, joined, Chishi doubted on their secular credentials as the party never condemned some evil acts of some Sangh Parivar partner.
