Gegong Apang's apprehensions about elections

The Arunachal Congress (AC) has opposed the State Government's proposal to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections on the ground of deteriorating law and order situation particularly in Tirap and Changlang districts.

Former chief minister Gegong Apang, also chairman of the AC, said that there had been many cases of killing, abduction and extortion in the two districts and apprehended that there could not be free and fair elections until the underground elements were flushed out of the area.

Mr. Apang was also very critical of the statement of some Congress leaders that at least 15 MLAs would return to the State Assembly uncontested.

Hinting at the possibility of threat perception by underground groups during the polls, Mr. Apang said nobody should invite unconstitutional authority in the democratic process. It would only boomerang on those who invite such elements. 'Until these pertinent questions are properly resolved, there cannot be free and fair election', he said.

With the Arunachal Congress becoming one of the partners of National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Mr. Apang said there would be adjustment of seats between the two for the Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls.

Both the parties would come to a definite understanding during the visit of the BJP national president in the State.

Criticising the functioning of the Congress Government under Mukut Mithi, Gegong Apang alleged that though it claimed to be transparent, corruption was rampant at all levels.
