Public awareness must to save environment: Lapang Erosion of social and cultural values has resulted in growing pollution and destruction of the ecology, according to Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister D. D. Lapang. If hills are to be made green, minds also need to be green, Mr. Lapang said in his inaugural address on a two-day National Conference on pollution and environment, organised by Shillong College Academic Society. Expressing concern over population explosion, the Deputy Chief Minister said that this coupled with hectic pace of development and technology had brought much imbalance affecting ecology and environment. Emerging of more towns and cities should in no way be allowed to trigger imbalance, he said adding that people should rather be more aware of the need for preserving and protecting nature. Expressing happiness over such seminars and particularly the involvement of educational institutions, Mr. Lapang said the younger generation would be more benefitted. Meghalaya Chief Secretary J. P. Singh man would have to play the major role of saving himself from the tyranny of pollution. |
