AGP-led front yet to decide candidate for Lok Sabha

The battle line for the lone Lok Sabha constituency of Cachar district is yet to be drawn as the AGP-led front, has not come up with the name of their candidate for the Silchar seat.

Traditionally, the Silchar parliamentary constituency is known for its keen triangular fights mainly among the Congress, BJP and the Left, particularly the CPI (M). But as far as the Left parties are concerned, the scenario seems to have changed from the last two elections as the CPI (M) has been able to beg the support of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People Party of Assam (UPPA) and Communist Party of India (CPI). In previous elections, these parties agreed to the candidature of Nural Huda, a senior leader of the CPI (M). But this time around, Mr. Huda does not appear keen on joining the poll fray.

The BJP and Congress have already unanimously proposed the names of Union minister Kabindra Purkasyatha and Santosh Mohan Deb, who was defeated by the former in the last polls respectively as its candidates. The AGP-led front is yet to decide on the name of their candidate. Assam irrigation minister and UPPA leader Abdul Muhib Mazumdar has asked for the alliance's ticket for the Silchar seat. But as soon as Mr. Mazumdar declared this his alliance partner AGP also put forward their claim and proposed state panchayat and rural development minister Sahidul Alam Choudhury's name.
