Mizoram to get Rs. 50 crore Central help

A Central Government delegation said it would recommend to the Government a special annual assistance of Rs. 50 crore for five years to Mizoram as it was the 'most peaceful State in the country'.

The Central team led by M. Venkateswaran, additional secretary (expenditure), Ministry of Finance, would ask for the Central grant over and above the annual plan outlay, State Chief Secretary Rev. Lalringa informed.

Mr. Lalringa, a member of the committee formed to find ways and means to accelerate development in the State, said the committee would submit its recommendations soon to the Union Finance Minister for speedy implementation of priority projects.

The Mizoram Government had informed the committee that among the 14 proposed projects, it accorded top priority to the 40 mega watt thermal power project at Bairabi, Tuipai Minor Irrigation Project and animal feed and fodder industry, he said.

He said the Central team had taken note of the acute fiscal crunch being faced by the State and would submit its recommendations to help it tide over non-plan liabilities amounting to Rs. 215 crore.
