Poor industrial growth in Mizoram Industrial growth in Mizoram has been less than one per cent between 1989 and 1999 due to severe power crisis, claimed the Zoram Industrial Development Corporation (ZIDCO), Mizoram's industrial support organisation. ZIDCO chairman Lalchamliana said industries in Mizoram have failed to progress due to lack of infrastructure, especially electricity. Out of the restricted demand of 52 mw during peak season, the State is able to produce only 26.17 mw from its 26 stations. Due to the slow growth, the Centre has placed Mizoram in a group of states which are considered to be industrially backward. Mizoram's handloom and cane industries, the only two it has, are not in a promising state owing to lack of funds and government apathy. The wood industry has failed to prosper due to lack of technical knowhow and a highly disorganised skilled labour, ZIDCO officials said. Since the industries have failed to prosper, out of a total of Rs. 2475.64 lakh loan disbursement in 1998-99, ZIDCO had been able to recover only 40 per cent, officials said. |
