Arunachal CM seeks grants for airport improvement in NE Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mukut Mithi has sought the personal intervention of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in releasing grants for improvement to twelve airports in the North-East region. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Mithi said a scheme for improvement of the airports had been under implementation with assistance from the North Eastern Council (NEC). As per the agreement, 60 per cent of the cost was to be borne by the NEC as grant and the remaining to be contributed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Meanwhile, the NEC had been instructed by the Centre to release its share as loan to the AAI. But the joint secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs subsequently had informed that instruction for the release of the share of the NEC as grant had already been given and necessary orders in this regard is under issue. But, the NEC is yet to receive the instruction, the letter pointed out. On the other hand, the NEC had already released their share of the cost as loan to the AAI as per the earlier instructions. But the AAI had refused to accept the amount released by the NEC on the ground that almost all the airports of the North-East region were running at a loss. Therefore, a kind of stalemate has been reached which is hampering the progress of works regarding the improvement of airports in the region, Mr. Mithi pointed out in the letter. The Chief Minister further stated that the dispute between the NEC and the AAI was affecting the transit of passengers and also carriage of goods. 'I would, therefore, request your kind intervention in the matter so that the Ministry of Home Affairs may be asked to issue order for the release of the share of the NEC as grant to the AAI', he said adding this would help completion of the project and improvement of airports in the North-Eastern region. |
