Show-cause notices to MLAs

MANIPUR Assembly Speaker Karam Babudhon served show-cause notices on two independent MLAs, A. K. Lanngam and D. P. Panmei, asking why they should not be disqualified from the membership of the State Assembly for reportedly becoming associate members of the Congress party.

The notices had been served to the MLAs at their residences and a decision on whether the two
MLAs would be disqualified from the membership of the House would be taken after receiving their replies.

The show-cause notices were served on Mr. Lanngam and Mr. Panmei following complaints that they had told a section of the press that they had become associate members of the Congress.

The Speaker said that he had documentary evidence that the two independents had become associate members of the Congress and attended party meetings.

They could become associate members of a legislature wing of a party, but not associate members of a political party, Babudhon Singh clarified.

The complainants, the Speaker said, included Public Health Engineering Minister Hidam Bidur, Power Minister Govindas, Minister of State for Power Thangmilen and Horticulture Minister Ngamthang Haokip.
