Apang alleges backstabbing Apang confident of coming back to power Former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Gegong Apang is confident that he will be able to make a comeback to power in the next Assembly elections in the State. He claimed that the people of the State are still firmly behind him and eager to teach a lesson to those who brought an abrupt end to his 19-year-long tenure as the chief minister of the State. Gegong Apang recently came to Delhi to meet the Central leaders. During his stay in the Capital Mr. Apang met several top leaders including Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Union Home Minister L. K. Advani. Mr. Apang's Arunachal Congress is a partner of the ruling coalition at the Centre. Gegong Apang further claimed that he was not thrown out of power by people's mandate but due to backstabbing by his former colleagues who were acting at the instance of underground elements. He said that underground elements were very active in Tirap and Changlang districts of the State. Evading any direct reply to the sensitive issue of conversion by the church in Arunachal Pradesh, Mr. Apang said that it was for the people to resist. However, Mr. Apang identified his stiff opposition to conversions as one of the reasons behind his fall as the strong church in the State worked against him to pull him down from the seat of power. In regard to the proposed move of the State Government institute CBI probe into alleged financial irregularities during his 19-year-long rule, the former chief minister said he was open to probe and would not like to say anything at this juncture as the matter was sub-judice. |
