Significant increase in Manipur's plan outlay The Planning Commission has advised the Manipur Government to reduce administrative cost and effect all-round improvements in the key sectors including power, roads and housing. The State has been also advised to improve the functioning in undertakings like the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC). The Planning Commission's advice came at a meeting between Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission K. C. Pant and Manipur Chief Minister W. Nipamacha Singh. In the meeting, the annual plan size for Manipur for 1900-2000 was fixed at Rs. 475 crore. The plan outlay marks a significant increase over the approved outlay of Rs. 425 crore for 1998-99. During the meeting, Deputy Chairman K. C. Pant lauded the State's impressive showing in the field of literacy. He also stressed the need to augment productivity in agriculture and accelerate implementation of the Central sector scheme for shifting cultivation control. On his part, Manipur Chief Minister Nipamacha Singh requested the Planning Commission to take steps for improving infrastructural facilities in the State. The Manipur Chief Minister lamented the fact that no major industry had come up in the State. He pointed out that though efforts would be made to improve resource mobilisation, the size and production density of State were coming in the way of heavy increase in resource mobilisation. At the meeting, Mr. Pant mentioned about the assistance provided to the State Government during the current financial year from the non-lapsable Central pool of resources for the infrastructure facilities of the fifth National Games and for the Leimakhong heavy fuel based power project which was under execution. |
