Fierce fighting between ULFA and SULFA Assam is presently in the grip of fierce fatricidal war. The fight between the ULFA and the SULFA has virtually created a civil war like situation in the State. The recent spurt in fatricidal killings started when suspected ULFA militants fired one rocket -propelled grenade (RPG) into the Usha Court apartment in Guwahati. Their target, as it is widely believed, were some surendered ULFA leaders who are presently residing in the apartment. Though no one was injured in the grenade attack, suspected SULFA members on the following night unleashed a series of attacks on the family members of the ULFA leaders. As a result, six close relatives of the ULFA leaders were killed in different parts of the State. Those who were killed by the suspected SULFA members were Haren Teron, his wife Barhani Teron and their son Bipul, Kanti Ram Boro and Sukuri Boro and Biren Das. Haren Toren was the father of ULFA activist Putul Teron, while Biren Das was the brother of ULFA member Bipul Das. Kanti Ram and Sukuri were close relatives of Tirtha Gogoi, another ULFA activist. His mother Ruma Boro also received serious injuries when gun totting assailants attacked Kanti and Sukuri. According to police, suspected ULFA militants used a Maruti van to fire the grenade. The impact of the blast was such that it rocked the neighbourhood of the Usha Court apartment vigorously. Luckily, the grenade hit a third floor flat which lay unoccupied. A minor fire broke out following the attack. However the fire was extinguished quickly by the residents of the apartment. The incident reportedly agitated the SULFA members to such an extent that they initially prevented the top police and civil officials from entering the apartment. On the following night, Assam had virtually a bloodbath. Around midnight, a gang of about six armed miscreants came to the Lokhra Thapana Chubri residence of Haren Teron and killed him along with two other family members. Mamoni Teron, daughter of the deceased, had a miraculous escape as she fell unconcious on hearing the sound of the bullets. The killers committed the gruesome murder in a swift and professional manner and before leaving the place warned Haren Teron's neighbours of dire consequences in anyone dared to come out of his residence. Though the incident took place at midnight, the police first came to the spot only in the morning. The police recovered 32 cartridges from the spot. |
