Bring back BSF: Zomi chiefs

The chiefs of Zomi dominated villages in Manipur, spread across parts of Churachandpur and Chandel districts, have demanded immediate deployment of the Border Security Force personnel at the sensitive Behiang border area in Churachandpur district.

Copies of resolution to this effect adopted at a recent meeting of Zou village chiefs atChurachandpur recently. The resolution demanded immediate deploying of BSF personnel at Behiang, about 240 kms from Imphal. The withdrawal of the BSF from Behiang about a year back had led to the rise in several illegal activities at Behiang and surrounding areas.

Behiang, which borders Myanmar, is considered to be a sensitive route through which narcotic drugs have been smuggled into the North-Eastern India from the Golden Triangle —— meeting point of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.

The State Government had ignored earlier demands of Zou village chiefs for immediate deployment of the BSF at Behiang, the resolution alleged. This had led to rise in activities of some armed militants causing a sense of insecurity among the people of the interior and border areas, the resolution said.

Copies of the resolution were also sent to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, director general of the BSF and Governor and Chief Minister of Manipur.
