North-East has vast scope for garment industry Readymade garment industry has vast potential in the North-East region as the people of this region are more fashion conscious, said R. C. Tiwari, chairman of the Garment Manufacturers and Dealers Association. He pointed out as the garment industry was labour-intensive and less capital-intensive, unemployment problem could be eased with the development of the garment industry in the region. Citing example of Bangladesh which earned nearly half of the country's foreign exchange through exporting garments, Mr. Tiwari said that this had proved boon for the country which also generated employment specially for women. Mr. Tiwari said the readymade garment industry also supported other industries as dyeing and bleaching, handloom and powerloom, accessories making and in the transport sector. Meanwhile, to encourage the development of the garment industry, a three-day buyers and sellers meet was organised in Guwahati recently. |
