Protest rally in Shillong over attacks on Christians

Expressing concern over the incidents of growing atrocities against the minority communities in different parts of the country, the Christians in thousands took out a silent protest rally recently in Shillong. The protesters wore black badges.

Later in a public meeting at the Polo Ground, the speakers urged the people to maintain communal harmony and expressed that the recent incidents of attack against the Christians had brought shame to India which is known from time immemorial for its spirit of toleration and religious harmony.
“Let us build bridges of love”, “Christians are citizens of India”, “Preserve secularism, stop discrimination”, urged some of the banners and placards displayed at the rally.

The speakers also called upon the Government of India to bring the guilty to book as promised by Union Home Minister L. K. Advani. They felt that the persons who were attacking the Christians deserve the most severe punishment.

Rebutting the charges levelled by various quarters that missionaries were converting people by offering inducements, Catholic Church Archbishop, Rev. T. Resto said, “if people in India convert to Christianity, it is out of conviction.”
