AGP renews demand for decentralisation of power

The Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) has once again demanded that apart from defence, communication, external affairs and finance, all other subjects should be handed over to the states immediately.

The demand was raised at a meeting of party workers held in Guwahati recently to demand decentralisation of power. The meeting was presided over by AGP vice president Biraj Kumar Sharma.

Setting the tone of the meeting Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta said that many of the problems such as floods, unemployment, price rise, etc. could be solved to a great extent with more powers to the states. He demanded that more powers should be given to the states by proper decentralisation of powers.

The meeting observed that the Central Government had failed to play its role for the development of the North-Eastern region and that the wrong policies of the Central Government were primarily responsible for forcing a section of the youth to take up arms.
