More NE in Congress manifesto: NECC Congress stalwarts of the North-Eastern States urged the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to give special focus to the burning issues of the North-East particularly the economic backwardness and the insurgency problem in party manifesto in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. A high level executive meeting of the North-Eastern Coordination Committee (NECC) held at Guwahati decided to form an eight-member committee headed by former union finance minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to identity the major political and economic issues of the region which will be then forwarded to the AICC for incorporation in the party manifesto. APCC president Tarun Gogoi highlighting the manifesto problem of the state suggested that the party high command should include the formation of a separate ministry exclusively for the North-East in the party manifesto. Some of the member also expressed the apprehension that the Congress candidate may become targets of the extremists attack during the forthcoming election. Congress member Paban Singh Ghatower urged the AICC incharge for the region Ambika Soni who was present in the meeting to impress upon the party high command to take up the issue with the Union Home Ministry so that adequate measure are taken in the regard. Nagaland Chief Minister S.C. Jamir, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mukut Mithi, Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang, Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma, former Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, and AICC North-East incharge Amibka Soni attended the North-Eastern Coordination Committee Executive meeting. |
