Drinking water cover in North East More than 55,788 of the total of 96,245 rural habitations had been covered with drinking water facilities in the seven North-Eastern states.Official sources informed that the drinking water facilities could not be provided to the 10,680 habitations in these seven states while the facility was partially provided in the 29,687 habitations as on January 1, 1999. In Assam, a total of 70,669 habitations were fully covered with drinking water facilities, 23, 076 partially covered and 7603 are not yet covered.In Mizoram, only 24 of the total of 911 habitations could not be covered with the drinking water facilities so far while 286 habitations were fully covered and 601 habitations partially covered.In Meghalaya, 6143 of the total of 8639 habitations were fully covered with drinking water facilities while 1497 partially covered and 909 are not yet covered.Of the total of 7412 Tripura's habitations were fully covered with drinking water facilities, 1973 partially covered and 867 are not yet covered. The sources said excess iron in the drinking water was prevalent in the North-Eastern states. Consumption of water with excess iron causes constipation, accompanied by other physiological disorders.Control measures include providing alternate sources free from iron or treating iron contaminated water with the help of iron removal plants.They said for treating iron contaminated water, 16,415 plants were approved and 9355 plants have already been commissioned in the country. |
