Zoramthanga urges Finance Commission to write off loans
Mizoram had suffered immensely due to insurgency during the period 1996 to 1986 as no
developmental work could take place. This view was expressed by State Chief Minister
Zoramthanga while holding a meeting with the Finance Commission.

He said, that unlike other states, Mizoram is suffering badly from lack of natural
resources, remote location and poor communication network which are retarding its economic
development to a great extent. Above all more than half the population is living below the
poverty line. The Chief Minister pointed out that the clauses to the Mizo Peace Accord
implied that the Government of India would write off previous loans, fully meet he
non-plan gap and provide sufficient funds to remove the infrastructure bottlenecks. He
requested the commission to invoke its power to write-off all the pending loans, clears
liabilities and past commitments so that Mizoram could enter the millennium on a fresh
note. In his presentation before the commission Zoramthanga also underlined the necessity
for strengthening of district administration and others developmental aspects in which the
state is facing extreme difficulties and asked the commissioner to go into these issue
before announcing its award for the State.
