Centre urged to declare unilateral cease-fire Senior Kuki leader and deputy chairman of the Manipur Planning Board Chungkhokai Doungel urged the Centre to declare unilateral cease-fire to all insurgent outfits in the North-Eastern region to bring peace through negotiated settlement. Mr. Doungel said that the time had come to create a strong public opinion for putting pressure on the Central Government to declare unilateral cease-fire to all insurgent outfit as was done in the case of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) for six months. During the period of unilateral cease-fire, the senior Kuki leader said, efforts should be made to convince different insurgent groups about the sincerity of the government for a settlement safeguarding Manipur's territorial integrity and interest of all communities which should form the bedrock of any negotiation. If there was cease-fire, all political parties, State Government and non-government organisations should make all out efforts to bring about a meeting ground of all insurgent groups in Manipur, Mr. Doungel said. The Centre had already announced cease-fire to NSCN (Khaplang) and efforts were on to settle the insurgency problem in Nagaland, said Mr. Doungel. Mr. Doungel said as there was cease-fire between the Centre and both factions of NSCN, it should not be a difficult task to declare unilateral cease-fire to different insurgent groups like People's Liberation Army, United National Liberation Front, Langlei Yawol Kann Lup, Kuki National Army, Zou Revolutionary Army, Karbi DFimasa Hallong, Achit Liberation Front, factions of Bodo groups or with underground organisations in different parts of North-Eastern India. |
